A reception to welcome both the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Air Safety Support International (ASSI) teams was hosted by Acting Governor Judi Leon and husband Mike Shryane at the Governor’s residence, Plantation House, yesterday evening, Tuesday, 21 March 2017.

The reception began at 6.30pm when the Acting Governor welcomed guests to Plantation House.

There was much discussion among guests who enjoyed a few drinks and eats provided by the staff at Plantation.

The evening wound down at around 8pm.

The Acting Governor commented:

“I was delighted to host this reception for the teams from MCA and ASSI. The event enabled them to talk to a range of people on-Island who have an interest in their work. They included those involved in sea rescue, immigration, Airport operations, legislation, shipping, fisheries, the fire service and the Met Office, among others. This was a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about what the MCA and ASSI do, and to share their knowledge of St Helena.”

The MCA arrived on-Island on 19 March 2017. Funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s (FCO) Conflict, Stability & Security Fund (CSSF), the MCA is leading on two projects in the Overseas Territories – ‘Maritime Obligations & Reduction in Contingent Liabilities’ and an ‘Overseas Territories Search & Rescue (OTSAR) Capability Review’.

The ASSI team has oversight of civil aviation safety regulation and while on-Island will be considering the extension of St Helena Airport’s certification.

The MCA and ASSI teams will also participate in a joint emergency exercise during their visit.
