‘Saint Slimmers’ – a Healthy Eating & Weight Management course – run by the Health Promotion team is progressing well, with a total of 54kg of weight already lost between the group!
The ‘Saint Slimmers’ course which started on Thursday, 12 January 2017, will run for 10 weeks. The group consists of 28 members, 25 of which are physically attending the course and three remotely following the plan.
So far, there have been five sessions. The first session was an introduction to the group, giving out literature and thinking about reasons for losing weight, and barriers to losing weight. This was followed by a more in-depth look at the healthy eating & weight loss programme and the new ‘eat well’ guide. The third session, led by Mike Harper, focused on healthy cooking, and the last two sessions were led by the physiotherapists – talking about the importance of exercise, followed with a practical session. For the next few weeks, the group will be considering how the healthy eating plan can fit into everyday life.
Health Promotion Trainer, Marian Kanes, said:
“The group is now halfway through their 10 week course. We have been really pleased with the weight loss and perseverance people are showing with the programme.
“We have constantly received positive feedback from the people attending the sessions, as well as anecdotally from people who have spoken to clients attending the group.”
A member of the group added:
“It really helps to have the support of everyone else. Being weighed keeps you on your toes. The talks are useful, even if it is difficult to find the things you know you should be eating, but it is the other people in the group that really make the difference.”
The team have been following a British Heart Foundation healthy eating weight loss plan and basing the sessions on a ten-week group plan from the Forth valley in Scotland, but adapted for St Helena.
