September 2016

The Quarterly Statistical News Bulletin for September 2016, covers the period April to June 2016, and contains updates for the annual rate of Inflation of the Retail Price Index, High-Level Economic updates, Estimated Population and Passenger Arrivals.

Annual inflation of the St Helena Retail Price Index (RPI) stood at 1.8 per cent in Quarter 2 2016 – up by 1.1 percentage points from the previous quarter and down 0.4 percentage points from the equivalent period in 2015. The major upwards pressures come from increases in utilities tariffs, food and transport costs.

In the second calendar quarter of 2016, the number of people on Island averaged 4,588 and the average St Helenian population was 4,099. Results from the February 2016 Population & Housing Census are now being used to produce population estimates.   Compared to the same period in 2015 this represents a 0.2 per cent (nine person) increase in total population and a 0.7 per cent (29 person) increase in the resident St Helenian population. With 19 births and 28 deaths in the year to date, net migration continues to be the largest driver of population change for both the total and St Helenian resident population(s).

In the first quarter of financial year 2016/17 a 7 per cent increase in passenger arrivals to St Helena is noted. This is primarily an increase in short term visitors – tourists and those visiting the Island for business purposes. An 11 per cent decrease in the number of RMS passenger arrivals is noted – partly an effect of four fewer calls of the vessel to the Island, due to the long journey to the UK and back. This is to a degree mitigated by three chartered flight arrivals, bringing 48 passengers.
